-The San Francisco earthquake occurred on April 19, 1906.
-This earthquake is recorded at 5:12 AM.
The motion of this earthquake caused all kinds of problems.
-37.7 (N) latitude, -122.5 (W) longitude
-The earthquake hit at a magnitude of 7.9. the motion was a right-lateral strike-slipwhich is to parts of land moving towards each other while moving back and forth in opposite directions. (picture below)
-This earthquake affected not only people in this area but land as well,they observed the San Andreas rift and how it open for more than 270 miles along a great fault.
-This earthquake was about 2miles from San Francisco near mussel rock.
The Great San Francisco Earthquake had many dire consequences for the economy.
$400,000 million were lost in properties.
$235 million were lost in insurance companies (this is the same as $5.67 billion in dollars 2009). These insurance companies did not have a clause that protected homes from earthquakes, but they were forced to pay because of the fires that resulted from the quake.
137 insurance companies were directly involved in this debt.
20 insurance companies went bankrupt.
Greatest disaster for insurance companies until 9/11/2001 attacks.
Had more relief efforts than when Hurricane Katrina hit.

The earthquake gave scientist insight on the effect of faults . the San Andres fault runs from Alaska down to the bottom of California because the earthquake happened do close to the fault it ran down all of California and open it more.
